CHALLENGE

Develop a premium specialty brand emphasizing the Canadian wilderness. Proceeds fund First Nations cultural traditions, environment preservation, and wildlife habitat. I created the concept, brand, packaging, and website prototype.

PROCESS

Researched Canada’s Métis, Inuit and First Nations cultures, languages, symbology and contemporary artists and artisans. Noted special tribal heritage resources including native heirloom herbs and grains. Explored the potential of maple as a broader Canadian symbol of diversity with more specific application to the First Nations of Canada. Identified amber, a gem formed by fossilized maple sap as representative of the treasure of Canada’s first cultures and peoples, and it’s unspoiled landscapes and ecosystems.

RESULTS

Ecommerce prototype design complete with conceptual package designs and brand messaging. Delectable hues and glints of amber foil build a vibrant, appetizing look. Illustrations blend the traditional graphic art style with soft light-infused contemporary watercolors. Developed the maple leaf skeleton as a secondary symbol of preserved ancient beauty.

TAKEAWAYS

I challenged myself with creating a brand, packaging, and a website prototype very quickly. I enjoyed every stage of the project.

The impetus for creating this brand came from a museum exhibit on the tragic culturecide of the First Nations peoples through the reservation schools. This brand is only conceptual. It would mean a lot to me to support First Nations in a real way.
